Who is Martin Baillie and what is a Business Growth Specialist?
Working with a business growth specialist or coach can be a fantastic investment opportunity not only to develop your business but to develop you as a business owner, a leader and a successful individual. In order to get the most value from your relationship with a business coach, is it imperative that first you choose the right ActionCOACH and Growth Specialist for you and your business. Finding and connecting with the right coach is not just about your coach understanding you and your business. While it’s important that they take the time to understand your processes, values and most importantly your ambitions, a coaching relationship is about mutual respect, communication, understanding and accountability. We appreciate that it takes trust and willingness to invite a coach into your business. So, we think it is only right that you get to know the person behind your coach.
“There’s no shortage of remarkable ideas, what’s missing is the will to execute them.”
– Seth Godin
Father & Rugby Fanatic
As a huge rugby fan, if I am not watching the Bury St Edmunds Wolf Pack I’m coaching the mini section at Bury St Edmunds RFC. My passion for the sport began at the age of 8 at Clarkston Rugby Club, in my home city of Glasgow and has stayed with me as I moved throughout the UK; playing for both Cambridge and Cobham Rugby Club before settling all the way down here in the South East.
It’s safe to say my two young boys share my passion for sport but, to my dismay, chose football over rugby! That said, I am still counting down the days until the season starts again! Healthy competition, be that with others or myself in beating my personal fitness goals, is hugely important to me and a value I try to instil throughout my personal life with my boys and professional life with my team.
Dedication to continuous learning and development is a key part of my ActionCOACH Bury St Edmunds team. Committing time every week to attend webinars and masterclasses, as well as reading books relevant to our disciplines is a valued part of our culture. As the famous Jim Rohn says: we must “learn to work harder on yourself than you do in your job”.
As an experienced and accomplished leader, developing and leading both Corporate and SME businesses over the last 30 years, I have amassed real world experience of the challenges business owners face and experience, I specialise in how to grow businesses. Long before becoming an ActionCOACH I held a leading Growth Specialist role with Suffolk brewing giant, Greene King. With 90 restaurants and businesses, with a turnover in excess of £110m under my management, I have encountered my fair share of roadblocks and challenges. From unmanageable workloads, team and recruitment challenges to marketing, sales, finance and even economic road bumps – the hospitality industry can be an incredibly turbulent and fragile industry to operate in. However, regardless of your industry, I have never met a business owner who has not at one time or another struggled with either time, team, money or planning. My experience, combined with the tried and tested ActionCOACH methodologies (perfected over the last 20 years) has enabled me to really make a difference to businesses across the region.
Passion for coaching:
The decision to become an ActionCOACH was one of the most considered yet easiest decisions of my professional life. Aside from being a sound financial investment, it allows me to dedicate my time and energy to adding genuine value in a field that I am passionate about. That’s why any of us starts their own business – right?
I am incredibly proud of my professional achievements to date, and when the opportunity to become an ActionCOACH arose I spent a long time considering how my personal and professional life would be impacted by this new venture. It occurred to me that I had been coaching and developing my teams and colleagues for years! I could clearly see that a huge part of coaching relies upon resourcefulness, and a genuine determination to promote and develop the best in others. Supported by the network of Action Coaches, and proven ActionCOACH methodologies, I quickly began working with a number of clients and sharing in their growth and success.
What does it mean to be a Business Growth Specialist?
Becoming an ActionCOACH doesn’t mean walking into businesses and imposing new strategies and processes. Developing honest, long-term partnerships with clients and business owners is a hugely collaborative experience – as it should be! While part of my role is to educate, present alternative solutions and ideas, I find myself learning just as much as I coach. Being connected to the ActionCOACH network, as well as entrepreneurs and business leaders across the region adds a rich bank of knowledge to my life.
I am extremely privileged to be one of over 1,000 ActionCOACHs worldwide, and grateful to live and work in such an industrious area as East Anglia. My ultimate goal as an ActionCOACH and Growth Specialist is to develop leaders, and shape the business community in this region by generating 1,000 new jobs across East Anglia. There is an abundance of talented business owners in this area who have sculpted brilliant businesses, and are now ready to take those businesses to the next level. In order for these business and business owners to successfully level up, they must be able to stop working in their business and start working on their business and take back control of their work-life balance. Helping business owners achieve the results they deserve is incredibly satisfying as a coach. Building honest, long-term partnerships is absolutely key – and makes celebrating success even sweeter!
