You can’t achieve your goals – But a future version of you can.

If you are setting goals that are easy to achieve they aren’t goals – they are tasks. Your goals – be them personal or professional – must be challenging, stretching and aspirational! Anything less is a waste of your time.

When thinking about goals and achievements, think of professional athletes. A world class sprinter doesn’t simply say ‘I’m going to beat my PB this year’, step out onto the track and achieve it… They make specific, practical goals like: ‘I will beat my PB by 2 seconds by the end of the season’. They review and adjust everything that influences their athletic performance – alter their diet, their training regime, their schedule, equipment, mentality and maybe even elements of their team. They shave off 0.1 seconds, then 0.2, 0.5, 1 second, all the while assessing and adjusting their behaviours and actions – and growing into a person who can run a faster PB.

By the time this athlete achieves their goal, they may have a completely different training regime, different body composition, and a different mentality.

The person they are when they achieve their goal is different from the person they were when they set it.

So, how does this apply to you and your business goals?

Well, first you must establish your goal. What do you want to achieve and when do you want to achieve it by?

Write it down. Tell people about it. Make it real.

Secondly, establish who you need to become in order to achieve your goals. What areas need adjusting? Which habits need assessing? What do you need to be able to do, that you can’t do now, to achieve this goal?

Crucially – how are you going to maintain accountability? Who in your life, or your team is going to keep you personally accountable for your goals? A professional athlete has their coach to help figure out where adjustments should be made, to make sure they are on track to succeed and to support them throughout the process as they grow into their goals.

Why not apply the same experience to your professional goals? If you are ready to become the person you need to be, invest in yourself and your business, then perhaps its time you and I have a talk and start growing into your goals.
